MacRoman

While generating RF prominently offers the "Use MacRoman as the start of the glyph order" option. Why is that?
I'm aware of the First Four Glyphs in Fonts rule for .ttf fonts, and how important that is (eg. if the first four glyphs are not in that specific order, anno 2013 some PCL 5 printer drivers might seriously screw up the typeface in print). So I would understand if RF would prominently offer a "First Four Glyphs in Font" option while generating, but I don't understand yet the importance of MacRoman.

its highly recommended to set at least the four first char as followed:

Hm. And why starting with the .notdef?

understandable... :)
Why Mac Roman: FDK is already using this for their default glyph ordering (see MakeOTFUserGuide.pdf page 10)
FYI: it will be switched off as default in the next version

"came out of a discussion a long long time ago on the beta list" as an answer doesn't help my understanding a lot…

kiekeboe!
Anno 2013 there are still a of awesome nasty text setters around.
MacRoman came out of a discussion a long long time ago on the beta list.
Personally I set my own glyph order and be sure that it is starting with a .notdef ....(maybe its should be switched off by default.....)
